Looking forward to presenting the results of the SCOT2K pine dendro project at the Archaeological Research in Progress Conference 2017, more details of which can be found here. My talk will focus on the heritage outcomes of the project including the dating of 20 or so pine buildings, mostly in the Scottish Highlands, which has been facilitated by (1) the development in the project of long native pine reference chronologies, from living trees and from sub-fossil material in lochs, and (2) the application of a new dating method, the use of ‘blue intensity’ measurements, a proxy for latewood density which is used alongside the more traditional ring width measurements.

New Dendrochronicle events are being firmed up for this autumn (2011) including a 2-day practical course in Exploring Woodland Heritage for the Community Woodland Association in October, and a 2 hour introductory session on Dendrochronology on 4th Sept with the Peter Potter Gallery Lost Landscapes programme in East Lothian. The two Tree-Ring Dating & Archaeology workshops on 27 & 28 July in East Lothian were really enjoyable, and with such a diverse and interesting range of participants. I would like to thank everyone who came along for their interest and enthusiasm. Photos of our groups during the visit to the Dalkeith Park Old Oaks accompany this item. My special thanks to Murray & David of Rampart Scotland for hosting, to Jonathan & Alison of NWDG for helping out, and to Cameron Manson, head ranger at Dalkeith Country Park, Buccleuch Estates for a wonderful site visit.  I’m now looking forward to organising my next events, being firmed up as we speak, for Sept and Oct for particular organisations. The last few places have been released for the Dendrochronicle one-day introductory workshop on Tree-Ring Dating and Archaeology. The tutor is Coralie Mills who will be using Scottish examples, and a mix of talks, hands on work and a field visit to an ancient cultural woodland to introduce you to this subject. No prior knowledge is required and the event is open to archaeologists and non-archaeologists alike. The workshop will be on Wed 27th July in East Lothian, organised in association with the Rampart Scotland fieldschool. More details and a booking form available from the Events page.
